Mar 9" cds on blue letter with printed Pittsburgh Portable Boat Line Hauling Freight Overland circular and one page Mar. 8th business letter dated, the circular is for the Pittsburgh Portable Boat Line for the Transportation of Freight to and from Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York,Boston; ink spot at right, Very Fine.

    The Line was a private shipping line that carried freight along the Pennsylvania Canal system from Pittsburgh east to Philadelphia, and then to New York, Baltimore and Boston and west to Cincinnati. The 82 feet long portable boats were built in three sections with each section watertight. The section locked together to form a complete boat, but were hauled separately-while still holding their freight-for overland transportation, either by train or teams of horses or oxen to the next water route on the canal system.

    OUT OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED COVERS OF THIS RARE EXPERIMENTAL COIL, THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE BEARING A GUIDELINE PAIR.

    This extraordinary cover was featured in a front page article in Linn's Stamp News on November 10, 2003 (Vol. 76, No. 3915). It was discovered in a collection unidentified for nearly 30 years before being found by the owner and subsequently certified by the A.P.S.

Brinkerhoff, Sedalia Mo., accompanied by a proxy for the Nebraska-Iowa Stamp Vending Company dated Dec. 31, 1909 as well as three other documents headed "The Brinkerhoff Stamp Seller and Money Changer", one describing advances in the business and soliciting additional investors, another related to the 1910 annual meeting and a third a subscription to buy shares in the Mississippi Valley Stamp Vending Company, Very Fine, Belasco records only nine covers with Type Iia perforations on Scott 344, Brinkerhoff used various companies to carry out his activities, the Nebraska-Iowa Stamp Vending Co. was the licensee to sell Brinkerhoff vending machines in 11 central and western states, investors in the company were given options to buy shares in any future operating companies established by Brinkerhoff, Very Fine, ex-Getlan .

On that date an advertisement was placed in The New York Times by Frederick Loeser & Co. stating that three vending machines would be selling the new Lincoln stamps in their Brooklyn N.Y. store.

    From Suffet, the 11¢ Liberty Series stamp was issued on 15 June 1961. In anticipation of this new rate and in anticipation of the new 11¢ international airmail postcard rate, which also went into effect on July 1st. No 11¢ Prexies had been sent to the post offices since fiscal year 1957, which ended four years earlier. However, demand for the 11¢ value remained comparatively light over the life of the presidential series. So, it's not surprising that there are still some on hand in 1961.
