    The James Allen Color Study by Year of the 3¢ 1851-57 Imperf Issue, mounted and well-annotated study collection of 224 stamps comprising Nos. 10/10A (36), Nos. 11/11A (188), all identified for color and organized by major years of issue and use, many plated, note nine Experimental Orange Brown, three 1852 orange brown, two 1856 Pinkish in medium and deeper, and two of the rare 1857 Plum shade (pale to deeper), this study was approved by Amonette over a three-year period when it was developed and assembled including all the rarer colors. the quality of stamps in the Allen chart is far above the usual, selected for overall quality with emphasis on color representation. Most all are four-margins or better, several jumbos, seven marginal copies, some truly outstanding shades, lighter cancels are the rule, especially in key inking locations, plus several unused, worth careful examination, the intangible value of this six-page color study created by Allen and approved by Amonette should not be underestimated, Very Fine.

    This chart was created with the assistance of W.F. Amonette over the period of three years. He personally reviewed the finished product as well as made refinements while work was in progress, and were checked against his rather extensive master charts. The stamps were purchased over a 20+ year period prior to the formation of the chart. Basic requirements were distinctive color, freshness, lighter cancels, little aging or ink damage, and overall high quality well above plating grade standards. Most are four margin examples. This is one of the finest charts available to specialists.

    1851-52, 3¢ Complete Color Chart of the "First 15 Months Plates", complete chart of 23 singles and 1 pair with color, pigment and date range, commentary and relative rarity included; all stamps collected for quality, few faults if any, nearly all are four margins or just clear, couple slightly in, three shaved a little, premium examples overall. Includes range of orange brown, including bright, yellowish, intense, copperish, brownish, reddish (9 stamps); Experimental Orange Browns include Dull to Darker, bright (6 stamps includes 1 bright pair and 1 unused single, plate 1L); Mid-1852 Orange Browns (2, 1L and 2L); early 1852 claret (2), and 1852 Brownish Carmines (light, deep, brownish, more red, the bright and very bright both are rare Plate 3's, 6 in total). Confirmed platings include: 59R1E, 81RO, 19R5E, 41L1E, 97L1E, 13L2E, 84L2E, 88R2E, 7R5E, 59L2L, 85L1L, 35-36L1L, 8L1L, 33L1L, 30R1L, 46L2L, 79R2L, 18R1L, 81R2L, 1L1L, 28R1L, 20R2L, 45R3, and 83R3., Very Fine and remarkable single page from the Large Gold exhibit, Difficult to recreate such a great page.; one with Philatelic Foundation certificate and Amonette notes included.

    1851-57, 3¢ Plate Reference Collection on Amonette cards, all imperforate plates are represented with four margin or better stamps (23 total) in a range of colors, on "Amonette cards" identifying major characteristics such as color, inner lines, major design differences, includes 13 orange brown stamps (63RO, 46LO, 58RO, 87R1E, 81R1i, 84R1i, 4L2E, 97L2E (large bottom margin), 61R5E, 86L5E, 81L5E, 70L5E), others comprise 77L1L, 96L2L, 91R3, 89R4, 6L5L, 90L6, 22R6, 90R7, 92L7, 17L8, 6R8 in a variety of representative colors, twelve with blue cancels., no faults apparent, Very Fine and attractive Amonette plate reference collection.

    1851-57 lmperforate Color Reference Collection on Cover, study of 38 covers with colors noted on reverse, 10 by Amonette often with comments, and remainder by J. Allen using Amonette approved standards. Rather broad range of color and subvarieties including some extremes of the groups including two orange browns (small Boston paid on Yellowish OB, x-Chase collection), four early '52 clarets, several transition colors, several rather extreme color of yellowish rose red, brownish carmine (reddish), solid range of clear 1857 claret varieties, some gems collected for quality and color of the stamps, most stamps are four margins save for a couple touched. Range of years 1851-1857, strong run in 1852 in period of many changes to more stable red lead based colors, some color cancels and well struck cds cancels, few flaws but showy stamps, Very Fine and exceptionally nice reference.
