    ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED LEOMINSTER "ADVERTISED" PROVISIONAL LABEL USES.

    According to Chip Gliedman, Charles H. Colson of Leominster, Massachusetts, created small labels with postage due rates and instructional markings and applied them to letters requiring further actions or explanations. The use of such postmaster provisional postage due labels pre-dated the issuance of official U.S. Government postage due stamps in 1879 by almost 25 years. As most of his labels are formatted differently, they were apparently created either singly or in small batches.

    Massachusetts Advertised Covers, 1846-1914, excellent grouping of 60 covers. Selection ranges from the 1840s into early 20th century. Seven stampless and some others still with still with original content. Excellent selectoin of cities and towns. Lots of strong "ADVERTISED," "UNCLAIMED," and "NOT CALLED FOR" markings in some cases marking are made in green, red, and purple ink. Circular "Due 2" and rectangular "ADV 1885" noted. And many covers have marking on backside. Lot should be reviewed for hidden gems.
