Patent medicine flourished in the United States, including particular interest in the late 19th century of "magnetic medicine", a form of quackery that relied on the mysteriousness of magnets. A singularly notorious figure was Dr. C.J. Thacher of Chicago. Generally regarded as the "King of Magnetic Quacks", he once boasted in an interview with the New York American that his proprietary Thacher Magnetic Shield could "cure any disease that afflicts the human race".
