On June 8, 1861, Tennessee voters overwhelmingly approved secession. Tennessee was admitted to the Confederacy on July 2. In the wake of the June 8 Referendum, the US Post Office Department began to suspend mail operations throughout Tennessee. ln order to prevent disruption of service, the Confederate Post Office Department announced on June 17 that it would assume the operation of the postal service in the state. However, that action was not immediately implemented in all parts of Tennessee. Thus, both US and Confederate rates can be found on mail posted during the Independent State period between June 8 and July 2.Realized: $425
