W.I." forwarder's double-oval, endorsed "Via Bermuda", reverse with additional Lamb & Co. oval, Halifax (8.31) entry cds and Locke-Port (9.2) arrival; light wrinkle, Very Fine.

    1871 (Dec. 15) Matanzas, Cuba to Buenos Ayres, Argentina via St. Thomas and New Orleans, docketed gray folded cover blue "Francisco Aballi, Matanzas" two-line handstamp carried privately to St. Thomas, flap with blue "Forwarded by J. Niles & Co., St. Thomas W.I." double-oval, conveyed to D.W.I. Post Office and postmarked "St. Thomas, 30/12 1871" cds with domestic postage paid in cash, cover affixed with combination franking of United States 10¢ brown (150) tied by circle of wedges and Great Britain, 4d vermilion, pl. 12 (Z45) , sent on U.S. steamship to New Orleans where " Steamship " circular handstamp struck, eventually transported to Rio de Janeiro where " C83 " barred oval ties 4d, then carried via British packet onwards to Buenos Aires, blue crayon "2/11" rating for 2s11d inland postage due, internally docketed as received on Jan. 27th; some creases and toning with some reinforcing, a Very Fine and rare use, ex-Koester, Arnold ; signed Alberto Diena.

    ONE OF ONLY TWO COMBINATION OF UNITED STATES AND GREAT BRITAIN ADHESIVES USED ON MAIL CONVEYED FROM CUBA TO ARGENTINA VIA ST. THOMAS AND NEW ORLEANS.

    Cover was prepaid U.S. 10¢ postage for carriage from St. Thomas to Rio de Janeiro by U.S. steamship of the U.S.-Brazil Mail Line. Cover was mistakenly rerouted by U.S. steamship via New Orleans. The G.B. 4d prepays the British packet service from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Ayres.

    1872 (Sep. 27) St. Thomas, DWI to Paris, France, blue folded cover bearing G.B. 3d rose, pl. 7 (Z7), 4d vermilion, pl. 12 (Z10) tied by "St-Thomas, A, Paid, SP 27, 72" duplex with "C51" barred oval, red London Paid (10.14) transit and "PD" in circle, Calais (10.14) entry cds; bit of fold toning, otherwise Very Fine and attractive use at the 7d rate to France.
