Jul 12" cds backstamp on yellow cover bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by manuscript "Mellington Ills., July 12, 1866" postmark to military Captain, partial "Return to Writer" circular handstamp (RTW-2) also ties stamp, hand-written return address at left; reduced slightly at left, 3¢ affected slightly from edge place, F.-V.F., Illustrated in Karlen , ex-Karlen .

During the 1860s, Chicago used the "NOT TO BE ADVERTISED" straightline (Figure 13) was used for a few years (1863-66). Chicago used it for two types of mail: (1) drop letters and
(2) letters with return addresses.Lot 48
Chicago, Illinois Advertised Covers, 1857-1895, lot of 18 covers. Lot includes numerous "CHICAGO ADVERTISED" shields in blue. Also one item with US Postage due stamps and 2 other covers originated from Canada to Chicago with ineresting strikes especially on back such as DLO triangles and "CHICAGO CITY DELIVERY" ovals. The following markings were noted AD-2, AD-3, AD-4, AD-5 AD-9 and AD-12 noted (Ref. Piszkiewicz, p. 407); some faults, F.-V.F. group.

Yates City, Illinois "Adv 1", ms. advertised rating on 3¢ red (U10) Nesbitt buff entire canceled by "New-York, Nov. 25" cds to Pittsburg Pa., forwarded with "Pittsburgh, Pa. Nov 27" cds and "FORWARDED" "3" handstamps to Steubenville Oh., forwarded again with "Steubenville O., Nov 29, 1860" and blue crayon "3" cents due, total due of "Due 7" cents; small top edge tear, Very Fine and wonderful advertised forwarded use.

Illinois Advertised Covers, 1885-1907, lot of 26 covers. Great selection of different city markings such as Belleville 1878, Bloomington 1855, Lewistown, Georgetown, Knoxville 1897, Ottawa 1863 and Milford. On one cover a nice directive to advertise is noted in pen. Strong "ADVERTISED" and "NOT CALLED FOR" markings. a couple items still have contents and should be inspected.
