    Via Nicaragua, In Advance of the Mails, Sullivan, neat strike of oval handstamp on cover bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) vertical pair , margins except nibbled at left, tied by sharp "New-York 'Ship' May 9" cds to Boston Mass., endorsed "Nicaragua" at top; flap tear ending in small top edge tear, Very Fine and scarce Nicaragua use.

    Stmr. Sierra Nevada, Via Nicaragua in Advance of the Mails, blue oval handstamp on buff cover bearing two 3¢ dull red (11A) singles, pos. 87L1L, 6R3, margins to in, tied by "New-York, Apr 7" cds to Falmouth Mass., carried as endorsed by Accessory Transit Co. Sierra Nevada to San Juan del Sur, then on to New York, prepaid for the 6¢ over 3,000 miles rate; left 3¢ wrinkle, F.-V.F. and scarce Steamer Sierra Nevada oval use, ex-Chase (notes on reverse) ; with photocopy of 1994 A.P.S. certificate.

    The "Sierra Nevada" was built in New York in 1851, operated by the Howard & Son's Empire Line for three trips between New York and Panama in 1852, and then sold to Cornelius Vanderbilt's Independent Line and brought to San Francisco 1852-1853 while Vanderbilt was on vacation in Europe, which was also when Vanderbilt lost stock control of his Nicaragua shipping business to Cornelius Garrison. The "Sierra Nevada" was operated by Garrison's Nicaragua Steamship Company between Nicaragua and San Francisco 1853-1857. Vanderbilt regained partial control of his Nicaragua shipping business in 1856.

    New York 'Ship' Apr 11", sharp strike ties 3¢ dull red (26) guilde-line s.e. single, matching bold " Due 2 " handstamp on Shipman Thomas Looker cover to his wife in Cincinnati, Ohio; 3¢ small tear, otherwise Very Fine and scarce ship letter use.

    Tacoma Wash. "Paquebot", purple staightline and "Tacoma Wash. Oct 15, 1914" duplex tying Japan 10s blue on gray cover with "Strome & Co. Ltd., Yokohama" flap imprint to Ibsenhaus, Germany, endorsed "Per S.S. Mexico Mara via New York" at top left; couple tiny edge tears, Very Fine.
