    Packet Empress, red oval handstamp on folded letter datelined "Pettys Bluff (Ala.) 19th March 1852" to Mobile Ala., entered mails with Mobile "Steam 5" rating oval, F.-V.F. and scarce.

    The Packet "Empress" was a sidewheel packet built in 1850. First home port was Mobile, running Alabama rivers until 1856 when she went to New Orleans.

    Packet Empress, red oval handstamp on pen canceled 3¢ red (U10) Nesbitt buff entire from the Buchannon Carroll & Co. correspondence to New Orleans La., F.-V.F.

    Packet Empress was a sidewheel packet built at Jeffersonville Ind. in 1850. She went to Mobile and ran Alabama Rivers until 1856 when she went to New Orleans. She was burned and lost at Algiers La. on June 29th 1858.

    The Packet "H.R.W. Hill" was a sidewheel packet was built in 1852 at New Albany Ind. In October 1860, her boilers exploded at Baton Rouge with the loss of 39 lives.

    Steamer Minne-ha-ha, Lake Champlain, blue Sep 3, 1874 double-oval datestamp on pen canceled 3¢ green (U82) entire to Keeseville N.Y.; rough opening with some paper loss at left, otherwise F.-V.F. and unlisted.

    This handstamp is different than both the Klein and Milgram illustrated examples. The Steamer Minnehaha was a sidwheel packet built at Caldwell N.Y. in 1857. First home port was Alburg Vt. She was owned by Champlain Transportation Co. running route 1142 Whitehall-Plattsburg-Rouses Point Lake Champlain from July 1870 to June 1872 eleven-times per week.

    Steamer "National" was a sidewheel packet built in 1860 at Jeffersonville Ind. She ran the Mississippi and Red Rivers until 1873. Retired and taken to Cincinnati. She wrecked on the wharf at Covington Ky. and the high water carried her away October 1873.

    Steamer J.F. Pargoud, sharp bold strike of circular handstamp ties 3¢ dull red (26) on orange cover from Carroll Hoy & Co. correspondence to New Orleans La.; cover torn, otherwise Very Fine and choice strike, ex-Chase (note) .

    The Steamer "Prairie State" was a sidewheel packet built in 1863 at Wellsville Oh. Originally sent to St. Louis, then sold and moved to Mobile in March 1864.

    Steamer "Rapides" was a sternwheeler built in 1869 at Cincinnati. She ran New Orleans-Red Rivers until she sank 25 miles below Baton Rouge on Feb. 28th 1876.

    A RARE EXAMPLE OF "TENNESSEE" FANCY INTAGLIO STEAMBOAT MARKING.

    The "Tennessee" of 391 tons was built in 1846 and carried President Elect Zachary Taylor between Vicksburg and Nashville on his inauguration journey in February 1849.
